Datil New Mexico
Day 6 - 326 miles
I took 89A back south to Cottonwood and Arizona 260 East. It's a wonderful drive. Sparse to light traffic and cruising the edge of the Mogabani (sp) Rim. Much better than the low desert (I-10) or the high desert (I-40) You're in the Cococino National Forest most of the way.
I switched to US-60, which is a good road except for one short section, maybe 3-5 miles, that needs resurfacing. The road eventually flattens out in Eastern Arizona and Western New Mexico. Watch out for the speed limits. I crested a hill and the truck behind me was doing 65 (in a 55 zone) and the N.M.H.P. stopped both of us. I was lucky to convince him I was within the limit but it was a near thing.
The terrain picks up again as you enter Sitgreaves National Forest and then again in the Cibola National Forest.
Very pretty and the BLM maintained Datil Wells Campground is convenient and nicely laid out. Just a mile off the road and 22 campsites, most of which permit two vehicles (and who knows how many bikes.)
Total miles: 1423
