Hampton Virginia

Day 24 - 197 miles

Going north out of Cedar Island... well, it can take up to three hours to drive the first mile. We set the alarm, broke camp, and boarded the first ferry.

Two and a half hours later we roll off of the ferry onto Ocracoke on "Pony Island." Had a nice breakfast at the Pony Island Restaurant and then cruised up this barrier island. Above the city is all sand dunes and beaches, you can swim the sound side or the ocean side.

Then another ferry onto the next barrier island north.

We talked to some locals, Karen, Dara... and her little dog too!!!

This is just a 20 minute jaunt. The two islands make up the Cape Hatterus National Seashore.

We took note of the turf war between the sail boarders and the kite boarders... and rode on, leaving them to duke it out on the waves...

We cruised up the island until we cam to Kittyhawk and stopped to check out the Wright Memorial. It's impressive what they've done there...

I can almost imagine... "and Orville said unto Wilbur, let there be Lift, and it was good."

We intended to go on to the Dismal Swamp but a fire made the whole cape a smokey, hot, and dreary afternoon, and going to Dismal Swamp was heading right into it. So we shifted north and headed to Kip's place in Hampton.

Oil changes for the bikes is on our schedule, and then day trips to some Civil War sites including Gettysburg, before we head north toward Maine and our second corner.

Total miles: 6397
