Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area
Day 31 - 374 Miles
We broke camp and spent a leisurely two hours travelin north and out of the Park into Front Royal. After a nifty breakfast at a local diner, our favorite type of eatery, we headed north toward our second corner. It should be a few days but we feel like we're on our way again. We chose this route because it crossed West Virginia and we discovered we were doing a Five State day!! West Virginia at this point is just 30 miles across at this point... and then you encounter Maryland at what must be one of the narrowest points... just 12 miles.
We made good time through Pennsylvania, both noting it was quite smoggy and just about as hot as the southern states. So take your pick, Humidity or smog. I think I prefer clean air... well actually I know I prefer it.
Then we crossed the Delaware River into New Jersey (near Easton.) If you've only visited this state by air, traveling into Newark, or driving along the coast, you don't realize how deserved the appellation Garden State is. Especially along the northwest areas. And the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is truly and uniquely beautiful. The river carved an impressive set of cliffs through the landscape. Not long, not deep, but striking. And the park is sedate. Too bad the governer is closing the parks next month to save 4 million dollars in a 3 billion dollar budget... Seems "penny" foolish to us.
By the way, it was Friday the 13th and we didn't even realize it until the next day. Of no importance to us, but apparently noteworthy for a few people we talked to. LOL.
Total Miles: 8233
